LeConte in what is now part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. He spent his life promoting Gatlinburg and the Smoky Mountains.  He never went to school, but did learn to read & write and gained enough knowledge about the mountains, its wildlife, shrubs, flowers and trees that he was sought out by noted scientists, professors and well-educated people from all walks of life to show and teach them things about the mountains that they did not know.  Wiley's health failed before his death in 1954, and his trips to the mountains became shorter and less frequent. One day he was joshing his doctor about sending him a bottle containing only two or three pills swathed in a lot of cotton.  Wiley said, "I figger I may take the cotton and throw the pills away. The cotton might do me more good than the pills."  Wiley was patient and cheerful through his last days.  He insisted that his son Harvey and band keep playing the mountain music outside for tourists so he could listen to it, requesting his favorite song: "I'll Fly Away."
